Whales

Tagging a Bowhead Whale with D-tag in Disko Bay 2008.

Knowledge about the migration of whales and their preferred staging areas is essential when scientists assess the numbers and the impact on whales by human activities. Satellite transmitters are very helpful when collecting this type of information especially from hostile environments in the pack ice and Arctic darkness.

Humpback Whales can be individually identified by their characteristic tail patterns, and an id-register makes it possible to collect information about the migration. Chose a subject from the menu in the left column.
