Project researcher, Avian predators Published 25.10.2023

A time limited research position on the ecology of avian predators at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, GINR (www.natur.gl).

Application Deadline: 25th November 2023

Position available from 1st January 2024

General description

The research position is part of a project investigating the role of avian predators in the ecosystem of Southwest Greenland. Raptors serve as ecosystem modulators by influencing the population of prey species, the food web structure, and the nutrient cycling, but are also important indicators of ecosystem health. At the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR), we want to build up knowledge and capacity by focusing on two iconic and dominating raptors of Southwest Greenland, the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus tundrius) and the Greenland white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla groenlandica). We are looking for a scientist able to start a project investigating how these two avian predators modulate ecosystem structure, how they affect culturally and economically important species of prey, how they are affected by climate change and how they can be used as indicators of ecosystem health. The work with falcons will build upon an ongoing long term peregrine monitoring program (https://www.vandrefalk.dk). The peregrine program is run by an independent organization, and an important part of the job will be to transfer it to GINR. Activities on white-tailed sea eagles will be new initiatives.

The researcher will be a member of the Birds and Mammals department and will work closely with the founders of the South Greenland peregrine program, but should also strive to make synergies with other research activities at the institute.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a PhD or master’s degree, experience handling birds and working under challenging field conditions and a solid publication record. We are looking for a scientist with a good biostatistical background and that is problem-solving oriented. The work requires independent thinking, initiative and the capacity to work both individually and as part of a team.

Fluency in English is essential and knowledge of Greenlandic and Danish are clear advantages.

  • Quantitative methods in Ecology (in R)
  • Bird monitoring
  • Telemetry
  • Spatial ecology
  • Study design
  • Field work experience in Arctic areas
  • Use of climbing equipment for rope access work
  • Knowledge about Greenland and the Greenland society

We offer

The Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR) is the center for biological research in Green-land, and our primary objective is to provide the Government with scientific advice for the sustainable use of the living resources, and for safeguarding the environment and biological diversity. At the department of birds and mammals we carry out research and monitoring of animal populations that are important for the society in Greenland. We strive for excellence in our research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment, which is also relevant for the local society.
