General description
The research position is part of a project investigating the role of avian predators in the ecosystem of Southwest Greenland. Raptors serve as ecosystem modulators by influencing the population of prey species, the food web structure, and the nutrient cycling, but are also important indicators of ecosystem health. At the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR), we want to build up knowledge and capacity by focusing on two iconic and dominating raptors of Southwest Greenland, the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus tundrius) and the Greenland white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla groenlandica). We are looking for a scientist able to start a project investigating how these two avian predators modulate ecosystem structure, how they affect culturally and economically important species of prey, how they are affected by climate change and how they can be used as indicators of ecosystem health. The work with falcons will build upon an ongoing long term peregrine monitoring program (https://www.vandrefalk.dk). The peregrine program is run by an independent organization, and an important part of the job will be to transfer it to GINR. Activities on white-tailed sea eagles will be new initiatives.
The researcher will be a member of the Birds and Mammals department and will work closely with the founders of the South Greenland peregrine program, but should also strive to make synergies with other research activities at the institute.
Qualifications
The applicant must have a PhD or master’s degree, experience handling birds and working under challenging field conditions and a solid publication record. We are looking for a scientist with a good biostatistical background and that is problem-solving oriented. The work requires independent thinking, initiative and the capacity to work both individually and as part of a team.
Fluency in English is essential and knowledge of Greenlandic and Danish are clear advantages.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 1 year, with possibility for extension. Starting Date will be mutually agreed with the successful applicant with first possible starting date on 1 January 2023.
The researcher will live and work from Nuuk, Greenland. An apartment or a room for rent, owned by GINR will be available.
