DEFROST – The Greenland Climate Research Centre is member of new Nordic Centre of Excellence Published 23.06.2010
Greenland Climate Research Centre is member of the new Nordic Centre of Excellence DEFROST that will be funded within the Top-level Research Initiative’s sub-programme Interaction between Climate Change and the Cryosphere.
The overall objective of DEFROST is to improve our understanding of how the carbon exchange with the cryopshere (permafrost, snow and sea ice) is affected by climate change. Focus is on key cryospheric components such as land, freshwater and ocean systems; components that individually have substantial potential for changing ecosystem-climate feedback mechanisms.
Søren Rysgaard and Lise Lotte Sørensen are jointly leading the work package on “Sea ice and carbon exchange dynamics”.Their team will be composed of both marine and atmospheric experimentalist and marine and atmospheric modelers.
In this work package the transport and biogeochemistry of CO2 in the air-sea/ice system will be studied combining measurements of the CO2 fluxes and concentrations, atmospheric models and ocean models. Outcome of this WP will be improved understanding on how the sea-ice and the Ice Sheet influence the marine uptake of CO2, improved descriptions of surface exchange, carbon chemistry in ice and carbon biogeochemistry processes in the marine water.
