Greenland Climate Research Centre at sea Published 13.10.2011

Greenland Climate Research Centre is currently involved in two expeditions in Arctic waters.

Aboard the U.S. research vessel R / V “Knorr” Malene Simon is deploying listening equipment buoys west of Disko Bay. The buoys will help to gain a better insight into the whale’s migration in relation to extend of sea ice. The project is part of collaboration between Craig Lee of APL, Washington University and Malene Simon, Greenland Climate Research Centre.

Meanwhile, Soeren Rysgaard and Thomas Krogh are aboard the Canadian research icebreaker ”Amundsen”, en route from Kugluktuk to Quebec through the Northwest Passage. Here the climate research centre looks closely at the microorganisms in the seabed, currents and processes in the sea ice.

The Amundsen expedition is the first of many expeditions to the waters between Greenland and Canada and is a direct result of the cooperation between Greenland Climate Research Centre and the University of Manitoba. One of the objectives, in addition to the close collaborative research is to further develop cooperation on education and environmental studies in the Arctic.
